They hadn't heard of this issue before and were appreciative of the heads up. They are going to bring raise this issue at their national conference, where flare manufacturing and engineering companies will be attending. www.epa.gov/.../12thconf.htm

Also, to my second comment, I inquired as to whether or not alternative energy projects which utilize the methane for electricity or natural gas would elimitate the need for flaring. The answer is no and thus there is still a potential risk to birds of prey. Flaring is still needed in case the project needs to be temporarily shut down for operational or safety reasons or the project does not use all of the landfill's methane, which is sometimes the case.

Thanks for this blog post.

One idea to chip in is to connect with the EPA's Landfill Methane Outreach Program (LMOP and gain their help in spreading the word about this problem and recommended solutions. I called one of their team leaders and they hadn't heard of this issue so I forwarded this blog and a few other articles.

Another solution that all communities can investigate is whether or not flaring can be eliminated altogether by converting the methane to electricity or liquified natural gas which can be used to power communities, fuel vehicles etc...This can deliver many benefits including energy independence, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and now one more - saving raptors and birds of prey.
